A lovely spot for a picnic near Dinan

I love this place: the "Barrage de Rophémel" in Guitté.

How to get to it: from Guitté take direction Plouasne and you will find the lake on your left at the bottom of the hill.  Go to the end of the car park and you will find this picnic area.
You can also walk round the barrage. It is shady, perfect on a hot sunny day! The walk start from the centre of Guitté. See my other posts about "walking in Brittany" for more details.

Temple of Mars

Just before the town of Corseul where you can find Gallo-Roman remains, you will see a left turn for the Temple of Mars.

On site, the sign was gone so I could not get any information out about it, but once I have found some I will update this post! Feel free to contribute if you know anything about it!

Free to visit, free car park.

Corseul is about 25 minutes from our gite.

Corseul and its Gallo-roman remains

In the centre of Corseul you will find some Gallo-roman remains from buildings dating from II and III AD.

Several signs in English explain what was there (Basilica, shops, warehouse, etc), the layout of the site and the use of each building. Ie artisans and merchants met at the basilica for ceremonies and meetings.

Free to visit, free car park.

Whilst there, visit the Temple of Mars, on the way back to Dinan only a few miles away.

Corseul is about 25 minutes from our gite.

Le Quiou excavations

The site of Le Quiou was found thanks to an aerial photo taken in 1989. Since then, archeologists have been working on site each year the whole month of August.

Slowly they are discovering remains of Gallo-Roman villas: baths, living quarters, vases, etc.

The villa there is one of the most ancient, the foundations dating from the first century AD.

Visits are organised in the summer by the association "Les Pierres Vives". You can also visit the site unaccompanied.

Le Quiou is about 2 miles away from Evran and from our gite.

Free visit, free car park.

Mont-Dol

A short drive away from Dol-de-Bretagne, (direction St Malo) the Mont-Dol is worth a visit. From the top of the mount you will have a beautiful view on the bay.

On a clear day you will see the coast from Cancale to Normandy, and the impressive Mont St Michel of course. Don’t forget your binoculars!

There, you will find a tiny chapel, a tower, a windmill, picnic area and play area for children.

Everything is free to visit. Free car park too.

There is also a café selling snacks, drinks and ice creams.

On the way back to the gite, go and see the standing stone. Read my post here.
