How to pay the taxe d'habitation online

You can pay the taxe d'habitation online prior to 20th December for holiday homes. You are now to late if you reside in France (the deadline was 15/20th Nov).

See on your tax (avis d'imposition) the different reference numbers (numéro fiscal, Référence de l'avis, etc) and the web site. It is rather straight-forward.

Follow this link here
Click on:

Click on « Payer en ligne »
Numéro fiscal : enter your fiscal number which you will find on your income tax form or any other taxes
Click on “Payer en ligne”
Enter the reference number of the tax you are paying.
(référence de l’avis)
You will have to enter your French bank details. Once the tax is paid you will receive an email confirming your payment. Keep it for your records.

Please note you won't be able to pay your tax online once you have missed the deadline.

Please send me an email here if you require assistance with paying your taxe d'habitation online or after the deadline.

  2. Wow your response was amazing. Very helpful, just what I needed and so quick. Also many thanks for explanation and allerting me to the fact that our address would not have been changed by the tax office if the change hadn't been made prior to June this year. Your advise saved our avis d'impot going to a now non existant English address and a more cost in late payments! What a star and definately recommend you to others. Soooo helpful. Thanks again. 3. Can I pay my Taxe D'Habitation on line? I do not have a
French Bank account and I am in the U.K. at the moment, so cannot go
to a regional office with the cash to pay it

  4. Hello
You can only pay online with a French bank account.
If you don't have a French bank account, the other option is to transfer the money from your UK bank account to the tax office. You will need to call them to get their bank details (you will need the Iban and BIC).

    1. No Maxine, you can't pay online without any reference numbers. You can call the tax office and obtain a copy of your tax though.

  6. We bought a holiday home in France in January last year and the previous owners paid the taxe fonciere (with a contribution from us at the time of the acte de vente) and the taxe d'habitation, so we haven't seen either of them. We'd rather pay monthly to manage the cash flow. When we get the bills in October can we then pay those bills monthly, or do we have to settle them in full and then make monthly payments for bills we'll get in October 2014?

    1. Thank you for your message. If you want to set up a direct debit to pay your taxes in France you have to set it up from now (January 2013). It is in 10 instalments, so when you receive the taxes in October/December 2013 they are already paid. The last instalment get adjusted.
You can’t set it up online if you have never paid a bill as you don’t have any tax reference numbers yet.
If you need further assistance, please email me and I will be able to scan and email you a form to set up a direct debit for both taxes (Fonciere and Habitation).
You need to have a French bank account.

      Kind regards

  7. Hi Question - we are late paying our Taxe D'Habitation and understand and accept that we have to pay a 10% fine - I tried to pay onlinne but it seems the online option has been removed - can you confirm if that is the case and what other options do we have ?
    Thanks

  9. Hi, can you advise where to get your tax references for Taxe D'Habitation (and Taxe Fonciere) please ... we don't speak much French yet so an e-mail address would be best for us.

    1. Thanks for the quick response Rachel but we don't have any tax forms as yet (we bought the house as a holiday home towards the end of last year. I'm concerned that they will be posted to the house in France and we'll need to keep making trips to see whether the demands have arrived. I'd much prefer to go online as soon as possible and setup payment so we don't get any penalties. Thanks in advance for your help.

  11. The tax forms will be sent out to the address shown on your deeds. You can write to the tax office to let them know you now live in France.
The taxe Fonciere has to be paid by 15th October. You can visit the tax office and ask for a copy and pay then, BEFORE 15th October though!
I can help you drafting the letter if you need assistance.

  12. Hi Rachel. We don't live in France (it's a holiday home) and that's the problem. If you could send me the e-mail address of the tax office, I can write to them, get my tax reference number, setup my online account on the French tax site, then pay Taxe Fonciere and Taxe d'habitation online (rather than take 2 expensive trips to France in the autumn/winter hoping the forms have arrived). Hoping you can help :-)

We sold our house in July of that year and moved back to the UK jULY 15 2012 and was told by the Notaire that we were only responsible for paying part of the Tax Fonciere of which we did on Oct 16 2012. Are we now responsible and why as it taken a year to notify us of this problem.

The Notaire informed us at the time of the sale that we were only responsible for part of the Tax Fonciere of which we paid by transfer from the UK on October 16 2012. Are we now responsible for this full amout(408 EURO) and why did they wait nearly a year to let us know about this problem.

  16. Hi
As you owned your house in France on the 1st of January 2012, you should have paid the Taxe d'Habitation in November 2012 (or December 2012 if it was your holiday home).
The Taxe Fonciere is indeed worked out by the notaire on a pro rata basis.

  19. We were late paying our taxe d'habitation (January.) I went to pay online and as others have said I was asked for my French income tax reference in order to create a client space in Impots.gouv. I don't have one as we live in the UK. I emailed the tax authorities and they just repeated the fact that I needed the income tax reference despite telling them I don't pay income tax there. They also suggested using the impot.gouv phone app but without a French billing address you can't buy the app. Eventually after about an hour's fiddling about on the Impots.gouv website I found a way to pay online. I got a confirmation of receipt so assume it worked. I never used to have this problem and have paid the property taxes online for years. Is it because we were late paying or is it something to do with the new "improved" Impots.gouv website?

  25. HI Victoria,
Thank you for your message. You have to send your cheque to your local "Tresorerie", their details should be on the tax. The envelope they send you is for the TIP, a different address all together, a payment dealt in a different way. I hope this helps. Rachel

  27. Hi Rachel, wonder if you can help. I normally pay my taxe d'habitation via the impots.gouv site, and had everything set up so the payment would be made. Plus enough money in my account to pay it. Unfortunately on the 26th, GDF incorrectly took over 1000 Euro's from my account, and as such, I did not have enough money in my french account to pay the taxe d'habitation. As such, when the gouv came to take the money there was no money available, and as such they have not taken payment. I have now placed funds into my French bank account.. but my question. Will the government make another request for the money for the taxe d'habitation or will I have to contact them. If so. Is there a friendly english speaking helpline? as to deal with this could be complex? Thanks - David

  28. Dear David
    Thank you for your message.
Unfortunately the government will not make another request for the money for the taxe d'habitation so you will have to contact your local tax office. I don’t know if there is an English speaking helpline.
You can send a cheque to them (write your “numéro fiscal” at the back). This would be the easiest thing to do! Let me know how you get on.

  29. Hi Rachel,
I am moving end of February from my rental in Paris, and the landlady wants to show her proof of payment for 2015 taxe d'habitation before leaving (as I was in the apartment on January 1st 2015). I wonder how can I get the bill now, as they are usually issued in the second part of the year ... Thank you in advance, Eve.

  30. Hi Eve

Thank you for your message. As you said, the Taxe d’habitation doesn’t get worked out and issued for a few months so I can’t see what you can do except setting up a direct debit either monthly or a one-off so at least you won’t forget to pay it. Also landlords in France are not liable for tenants ‘outstanding bills and taxes so I don’t know why he worries about you not paying it!
To reassure him, just tell him it is on direct debit and will get paid!
Let me know how you get on!

  31. Hi Rachel,

I received my taxe d'habitation bill this week but I am in the UK now and have closed my French bank account.
I tried to pay online but it was saying that my English bank Halifax wouldn't allow it.
Am I abe to pay by English bank cheque or should I call them to get their transfer details? I lived in Nantes and there's one address on there for the Centre des Finances Publiques in Nantes but there's also an address in Rennes but I think that one might just be for TIP SEPA payments which I assume I can't do as I no longer have a French bank account.

    Thank you in advance.

I have purchased a property which is now rented long term to a tenant and I live in the UK. I know I will need to pay Taxe Fonceiere but want to know how to register my UK address so I get sent the invoice.

  40. Hi Claire
Thank you for your message. The taxman will automatically send you the Taxe Foncière to the address on your deeds ie the address you gave the notaire when you bought the property.
If you have moved since then you need to write to your local tax office and inform them of your new UK address.
    I hope this helps.

  41. Rachel, we have had a holiday home in Aude for thirteen years and we are familiar with the taxes, habitation and fonciere. over the years i usually paid at easter and during the summer with cash that various friends who used the house paid us. Clearly thie last of this would be in the summer time.
Some years ago ,they stopped taking cas over 300 or so euro and we send transfers to the Tressorie.

Since we do not pay quickly ,we incur the late payment fee of approx 10 %.
it seems reasonable that having incurred this cost, that we should have the 12 months before the next factures arrive to pay the totals.

This must not be acceptable now . Last year they raided our French bank account, ( we have no cheque book and no link to the tresorie) . this is not the end of the world, since we owe the money ,but the most annoying thing is that the bank charged us approx 140 euro extra. This year they did the same. It seems attrocious that for a bill of approx 1800 euro (both taxes), paying 10 extra ( for not paying early, thats O.K.) but a further 140 in fees for having our account raided is a bit rich.
it appears from this and other websites that we can pay over 10 months by direct debit. is this on the actual bills ( 1800) or does the approx 10 % get added on anyway

    1. Dear Johnny
Thank you for your message. The Taxe Foncière is due on 15th October and Taxe d’Habitation 15th December (for holiday homes) so if you pay at Easter you are late paying this is why you get charged 10% extra.
If you organise to pay in 10 installments you won’t be getting fined for late payment. You will be paying from January till October for the same year. Ie if you start paying in January 2017 it will be for the TF and TH (Oct and December 2017).
Remember you must pay the ones for 2016 (Oct and Dec 2017)!!
NEW SINCE 2015!! You can’t pay cash at the tax office if your taxes are higher than 300 euros.
      I hope this helps.
      Rachel
Ps: contact me if you need help to set up your direct debits. I will be able to help for a small fee.

  44. Hi
We purchased a holiday property in France in August 2015 and received our first bill (taxe fonciere) in December 2016, which we paid online.
The problem is we have not, as yet, received our first bill for the Taxe d'habitation and we are now in late January 2017. Will we get fined for this?
Eventually we would like to pay both by direct debit, can we only set this up in Oct/Nov 17 for pasyment of the 2018 bills?

You should have received the taxe d'habitation. You should contact your local tax office just in case it got lost in the post.
You can already set up a direct debit for the taxe fonciere 2017 (payable around 15th Oct).

Your daughter is indeed liable for the Taxe d’habitation. I would go online pay it but I would deduct 128 euros for the TV licence and I would write a letter to the tax office saying there was no TV in the accommodation.
